The California Arts Council in collaboration with the National Arts and Disability Center at UCLA announces a funding opportunity through June 2010.
PURPOSE:
The purpose of the Arts and Accessibility Technical Assistance Program is twofold:
1. To assist California artists with disabilities with their professional development and
2. To assist arts organizations to be inclusive of audiences and artists with disabilities.
GRANT AMOUNTS:
The California Arts Council (CAC) and National Arts and Disability Center (NADC) at UCLA will make mini grants from $500 to $1,000 available to artists with disabilities and arts organizations.
FUNDING GUIDELINES:
Mini-grants for the Professional Development of Artists with Disabilities will support:
- Attending workshops, conferences, seminars and master classes.
- Travel (within the United States) to exhibit, showcase or perform work.
- Services or supplies to assist in the completion of work.
- Preparing work samples, marketing materials or portfolios.
Restrictions:
- This program does not fund scholarships for pursuing undergraduate or graduate education.
- Artists may not receive more than one grant within a 12 month period.
- Applicant may not apply for funding for the same activity.
- Applicants must be 18 years or older and be full time residents of California.
- Funds may not be used for start-up funds for a small business.
Mini-grants for Arts Organizations will support:
- Services and supports to hire California artists with disabilities.
- Removing barriers to access by audiences by creating alternative formats for materials such as large print or Braille, audio description, ASL interpreter, and/or captioning.
- Attendance at meetings, workshops, trainings that address accessibility.
- Hiring a consultant to advise or provide training to improve the accessibility of your organization and programs.
- Establishing an access advisory committee.
Restrictions:
- We do not fund programs for children or youth at this time.
- We also do not provide funding to underwrite an event.
- We do not fund construction or renovations.
- All funded activities or programs must be in California.
- For arts organizations, requests for funding must be made 60 days prior to any planned activity or event.
- You are not allowed funding for the same service repeatedly, for example apply annually for sign language interpreters.
ELIGIBILITY:
California nonprofit arts organizations and artists with disabilities are eligible to apply (See Restrictions above).
We require that the California Arts Council and the National Arts and Disability Center logos be used on all relevant printed and electronic materials.
PROGRAM PROPOSAL INSTRUCTIONS:
All applications must be prepared on a computer/and or typed. No handwritten applications will be accepted. Please provide the following information in no more than 3 pages.
1. Name of Applicant.
2. Name of Organization, if applicable (include address, telephone, e-mail and fax). Please provide the name of the contact for this activity if different than the applicant as well as a contact email address.
3. Artists are required to submit a professional resume with your application.

4. Tax ID or Social Security Number.
5. Date (s) of the Activity.
6. Budget for the proposed activity including any in-kind or matching funds used. For arts organizations, your overall project budget should include a line item for appropriate access accommodations for individuals with disabilities. A detailed budget must be included in order for us to review your application.
7. Project Summary: 75- 100 word summary of project. This abstract will be posted on our web site.
8. Brief description of the activity, program, or service that you are requesting support.
9. For organizations, describe how you will provide information to the public or potential participants about your program's accessibility and the availability of services. See http://nadc.ucla.edu/promoting.cfm for suggestions.
10. Total amount that can be requested is $1000.
11. Title and signature of the applicant.
SUPPORTING MATERIALS:
Please provide a limited number of supporting materials that confirm the details of the proposed project. For artists, this might include letters of invitation or acceptance, or workshop registration forms. For arts organizations that may include programs, brochures, flyers, or other information about the proposed project or your activities. For both artists and organizations please provide written costs with estimates of materials, services or supplies.
REVIEW PROCESS:
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. As soon as the application is received it will be reviewed. Notification will be made no more than 1 month after the application is received.
REQUIREMENTS:
Awardees will be expected to submit final report and brief evaluation. Arts organizations are expected to submit a copy of all publicity materials used showing how the accommodation services were advertized in their marketing materials. The National Arts and Disability Center at UCLA and California Arts Council logos should be printed on all materials and/or credited for providing support.
